Microbiology Building

The University of Minnesota Microbiology Building commissioned a distinctive wall graphic that would reflect their research focus, incorporate the Mississippi River, and showcase their brand colors.

The graphics team at BWBR designed an immersive three-story installation using a sophisticated layering approach. The foundation features cellular textures arranged in gridded squares, overlaid with a contrast layer in black, green, and tan. Above this, a series of screened shapes creates visual depth, followed by three gradient layers—green, blue, and full-color—that add dimensional richness. The crowning element is a Mississippi River outline that flows organically through the entire composition.

The installation reveals itself gradually to viewers, offering micro-level cellular details that become apparent upon closer inspection while maintaining a macro-level connection to Minnesota's natural landscape. This intentional design encourages scientists to discover new perspectives as they move through the space, fostering a collaborative environment.

Working with a local Minnesota print vendor, we enhanced the design with metallic overlay printing on select shapes, creating dynamic interplay with the building's lighting.
