Environmental Graphics Installation
Monument Health Hospital engaged BWBR to revitalize their interior graphics with an emphasis on creating interactive, playful, and vibrant elements for their pediatric patients. The design concept centered on South Dakota's distinctive landscapes and wildlife. This comprehensive project encompassed 72 patient room wall graphics, 72 customized care boards, three lobby graphics per floor, a café graphic, and directional maps for each level.
My design process began with a thorough analysis of the floor plans to strategically position artwork and organize animals by habitat, creating an intuitive wayfinding system throughout the facility. I developed a cohesive environmental theme where the first floor represented "Wetlands," the second floor showcased "Grasslands," and the third floor featured the "Forest Floor." This ecological organization not only created distinct visual identities for each level but also enhanced navigational clarity for patients and visitors.
I then created multiple design concept options, starting with the three primary lobby graphics for each habitat-themed floor. After the client selected their preferred design direction, I expanded this aesthetic across the 23 patient rooms on the second floor, developed custom care boards for each room, and designed complementary graphics for the café space.
A key interactive element in each habitat lobby graphic is a series of circular cut-outs featuring various animals native to that ecosystem. These were specifically designed as engaging "Seek and Find" activities, providing children with positive distractions during potentially stressful hospital experiences. This thoughtful detail transforms ordinary corridor spaces into opportunities for discovery and delight, contributing to a more comforting healthcare environment.
